John Torie - Procurement & Contracts Manager
"What has surprised me the most is how much I have learned about horticulture and technology."
After starting in inside sales in the retail sector, my interest in operational matters grew. This led to a role as a buyer and eventually as a sales representative for the Benelux and the United Kingdom. The extensive travel made me look for a new challenge, which resulted in a position as a supply chain specialist at Boeing for the 737 fleet of companies such as TUI. During the COVID period, I decided to take a different direction and discovered the innovative horticultural sector. At Hoogendoorn, I found the perfect match as a procurement manager.
My job revolves around ensuring that everything arrives on time so that we can make our customers happy. I work closely with almost all departments within Hoogendoorn. That collaboration, combined with great colleagues, ensures that I go to work with a smile every day.
Innovation is a constant factor in my work. We continuously develop new products, ranging from small adjustments to completely new hardware groups. Together with our suppliers, we ensure that these introductions run smoothly.
Hoogendoorn is constantly improving. When I see how much has changed over the past four years, I can't wait to see what the next five years will bring. Where will I be? Somewhere in the middle.
A moment of pride? When a salesperson asks if I can deliver something that seems impossible, and after a lot of effort, I manage to make it happen for the customer. That brings great satisfaction.
What has surprised me the most is how much I have learned about horticulture and technology. I never expected to gain so much new knowledge, and I still learn more every day. Of course, that only works if you are open to it.
